Hey guys, this is Hack Your Online Business podcast episode number 131. I’m Chrystabelle, host of the podcast. I want to share my response to a question I received the other day.
Someone asked me on Instagram, how long does it take to be successful in business? She was sharing about life and how she’s been trying to make her business work for the last couple of years. And it has been a huge struggle since day one, and now with the Coronavirus and the down economy, she’s on the brink of giving up.
This is a legit question to wonder, how long does it take to be successful in business. It’s something that we have all wondered about at some point in our business when things weren’t going well. And so I want to give you my opinion on this.
But before I dive into my advice, I have a free resource for you on list building. So here’s my advice on how long it takes to be successful in business. The fact is, 90% of businesses fail in their first five years. Running a business, being an entrepreneur is fucking scary.
It takes a lot of courage to quit working for people and start your own business. When I left my advertising career to start my first business, I failed big time. And throughout the years, I have had multiple business failures.
I had 2 online health companies that didn’t work out. Side story here, it is super important to have the right co-founder if you are teaming up with someone or several people.
And so it is scary when you look at statistics on how many businesses fail every single day, and how long it actually takes to become successful in business.
But the point of being an online entrepreneur is, you only need to make it work once. You can have a history of 9 failed online businesses, but if your 10th online business takes off, that’s all you need.
So what I’ve learned over the years is, it does take time to get success in anything that you do in life, whether that’s starting a business or learning a new skill. And having patience and determination is what separates a wanna-be entrepreneur from the ones who eventually reap the rewards.
And the reason why most business success is not instant is because we perfect our business and marketing knowledge over time. We grow our network connections over time. We build an audience over time.
The more mistakes we make, the more so-called failures we experience, the more we learn and refine our next steps.
It took me around four years to start feeling like my online business is growing and becoming successful. Yet I don’t feel like I have reached the pinnacle of my entrepreneurship and I’m so-called successful.
One of the advice that I can give you if you’re struggling with making your business work, especially if you’re at a point of defeat and you’re considering giving up, look at what successful entrepreneurs have done and learn as much as you can from those who came before you.
I especially love to learn about how their early years running a business. Very often we see the success and not the failures, but any entrepreneur will tell you it takes a lot to get to the level that you want to reach.
Listen to podcast interviews, read the books they’ve written, absorb what they have gone through and then how they overcame the obstacles.
Another advice I can give you is to work on your entrepreneur mindset. Very often, we focus on the business and marketing strategies. But you’ll be surprised to know that it’s often not the strategies and tactics that stop business growth, but rather the entrepreneur himself or herself.
And the reason why is simply because they have limiting beliefs that is stopping them from reaching full potential, or limiting beliefs that stop them from charging enough, limiting beliefs around not being good enough that stop them from asking for the sale, limiting beliefs around scarcity and thinking that there are not enough customers to go around just because their competitors are doing well.
I started in marketing for the last decade, I have built my career in marketing since my early 20s. And I can tell you, without a shadow of doubt, that when I started to pay attention to the mindset I had around my self-worth, my abilities, I started to get more clients. It was never about the lack of marketing knowledge.
So if today, you are frustrated and you’re tuning in to the podcast hoping to find some inspiration and motivation for your business, trust that you will start to see success in time.
Of course, in the meantime, you want to make sure that you’re actively improving your business knowledge and marketing knowledge and sales knowledge, and keep expanding what you know and who you know.
If you keep on doing the same thing over and over again without success and you don’t change anything, then it’s going to take you longer to reach that success that you’re looking for.
Now, don’t forget if you want to learn how to build a large email list and audience from scratch, I have a free list building guide with the 7 stages of list building. Go to the website https://www.hackyouronlinebusiness.com/listbuildingguide/ to download the free list building guide.
