Building an email list is one of the smartest things that you can do to start and grow your online business. I want to share how to build an email list the right way. Because just like everything in life, there's the right way to do something and there's the wrong way to do something.

So i'm going to share what not to do to build your email list, and instead the things that you should be doing to build your email list the right way.

Now here's what you got to know about email marketing. Email marketing is still the best form of communicating with your customers, it is still the best way to build your know, like and trust factor, it is still the best way to nurture your audience and turn them into paying customers.

So yes, even though social media is hot, you should not ignore email marketing and you should know how to build an email list.

But first let's address the big email elephant in the room - the wrong way of building an email list.

Now the wrong way of building an email list is trying to buy or rent an email list from some company or someone. You never ever want to buy an email list, you never want to rent an email list, and for sure you do not want to scrape the internet for email lists who have never given you consent to email them.

This is something that bugs me all the time. I receive cold emails from companies, factories, manufacturers, businesses, SEO companies reaching out to me, putting me on their email list without me ever giving them consent.

Some people even take it further. They add me on linkedin and then they try to scrape my email address, again without my consent.

So when it comes to knowing how to build an email list the right way, consent is everything. Just like in life, you want to get the consent of that person before you even send them an email, before you even add them to your email list.

So remember, by consent, I mean that, that person has given you consent to email them about a specific thing in a specific way. Do not buy, do not rent, and do not scrape emails without having their consent.

And so if you're like, well who cares, Chrystabelle, I'm just gonna buy or rent or scrape those email lists and hopefully one out of ten thousand would reply or buy my stuff, now what's the worst thing that could happen?

The worst thing that could happen could be that your email address, your email IP address gets blocked, gets marked as a spam trap due to complaints from these email addresses, you get low engagement and you screw up your email delivery. So you'll always get delivery problems, for now and for the rest of time. So you don't want to fall into that problem.

So now let's talk about how to build an email list the right way.

Building an email list the right way starts with getting permission, starts getting consent. So how do you get them to give you the consent to email them?

It all starts with bribing them with something to get them to give you their email address in exchange for that bribe.

So I want you to think about the last time that you signed up for someone's email newsletter. What was happening? What made you sign up for the email newsletter? Was it because you were signing up for something for free and then you gave them your email address? Was it because you were signing up for a contest? What was happening?

Think about the last few times that you signed up for an email newsletter. Now use that same principle and imagine how your audience would sign up for your email newsletter.

So what can you give away as the bribe to get someone to give you the email address and give you consent to have them on your email list so that you can email them?

There are a couple of things that you can do, it really depends on what you sell. But here are a couple of things.

The first one is a discount or a coupon to your product or to your service. This is very commonly seen by e-commerce stores. So you sign up for the email newsletter and you receive a 10% off or 20% off first purchase coupon. So that's one way to get someone onto your email list.

Now personally I'm not a big fan of discounting my products or services, so i almost never offer a discount or a coupon or a voucher to sign onto my email list. But it works really well, especially for e-commerce. I know that because I've signed onto many newsletter lists for brands like Zara or Nike because they offered me a first-time buyer's coupon or voucher just by signing up for their email newsletter list.

And then the second way to bribe someone to give you their email address, give you their consent to email them, is to bribe them with free content. So not just any free content, but free content that actually matters to your audience.

So you want to give away content that attracts your ideal paying customer. And that content, that free content, can be in the form of a lot of things. It can be a video, it can be a mini course, it can be a PDF, it can be a checklist, it can be an infographic, it can be a white paper. It really depends on what you're giving away and who your ideal paying customer is.

Now if you want to get a little bit more creative and think of other ways of giving away free content, you can also look into things like free challenges, so five day challenges. You can look into things like running an online summit and giving away the tickets to the online summit for free.

So those are a couple of ways to give away free content a little bit more creatively, that maybe your competitors are not doing.

Now here's what I want you to know. Do not give away free updates. No one ever signs up for a mailing list hoping to get free updates. Do you ever want to get free updates? I know I don't.

It doesn't appeal to me to give away my email address in exchange for free updates. So don't offer free updates, it's not appealing enough. You want to offer something that is a good enough bribe to get them to exchange something that matters a lot to them, which is their email address. So always make sure that the bribe that
you're giving away is something of value to them.

Now as you are growing your email list and you're getting more people onto your email list, you do not want to forget to be consistent with sending out emails to your list.

One of the biggest problems that I see a lot of people do is they get excited about email list building, they start to build their list, and then they never email their list. They're not consistent with emailing their list.

You wanna make sure that you have a regular schedule. So if you say that you're gonna email on every Tuesday, you wanna email every Tuesday. If you wanna email them twice a week, you stick to twice a week schedule.

Make sure that you are consistent with what you're doing, so that even as you're building your email list you are building your email list the right way.
